As society advances towards everlasting motion in the age of technological disruption, we lose sight of the bonds that hold communities together. However, sometimes, all it takes is one person to come in and transform an entire village, connecting everyone and creating memories. This gentleman is my neighbor, who, as I learned, had a shocking secret hobby that turned our community around forever.

I Never Knew My Neighbor – The City and Me
My neighbor, for the better part of my time in this house, remained a mystery. Most of the people did not even know their name because this person was the definition of a recluse. Their clean-looking surroundings were almost always silent. It was easy to guess what most of us were thinking; they did not have the time or desire to be social.
Now and then, the locals heard funny stories about weird noises and occasionally seeing lights at odd times. The reality is that some called it strange behavior while others took delight in wild theories. But, all of us were completely unprepared for what the actual reality was.
When Secrets Come Into Light
At the first such meeting during the summer months, one incautious child intervened. This time, it was an inquisitive kid who entered their yard during an inconsequential neighborhood get-together — and discovered something remarkable. An assortment of intricately detailed models of imaginary beasts, as well as a couple of My Neighbor Totoro models, was arranged at the back in what appeared to be a private shop.
That’s how it happened that my neighbor was a very talented replica maker and sculptor who specialized in making unique and stunning art pieces based on works by Studio Ghibli. And their works, realistic sculptures of Totoro and other famous characters, were the works of truly passionate people.
From Hobby to Business
However, as it happens, every mystery is soon solved. My neighbor started giving masterclasses. As many as there had been participants in the creation of small My Neighbor Totoro-inspired figures, later there would be other inspiring pieces on offer too.
People were eager to come as these sessions were highly energetic and thrilling. Those who hardly had the opportunity to talk began sharing experiences with scholars and art. Children were taken into the qualities of the worlds of Studio Ghibli by their parents and at the same time all of their parents learned something new.
The Impact on Our Community
- The Art of Reconnection It is quite obvious that the interaction of people today has changed and become less ‘personal’. Almost every neighbour has a purpose, and my neighbour made it her life goal to get people into the artisan workshops. As we painted or sculpted together, new friends were made and formed during the sessions, and new friendships developed outside the crafting sessions.
- Appreciating Art and Creativity The community got imbued with love for art once more. Creative juices flow inside as we carry out activities such as making a Totoro figurine or any activity that requires artistic expression.
- Motivating the Young People in the Area The house that I lived in transformed into a home as the kids in our area took up the role of active participants. Not only did they acquire technical skills, but they also acquired traits such as teamwork and patience. It was amazing how my neighbor’s enthusiasm sparked their imagination and encouraged them to seek out imagination wherever it led.
- Breaking the Age Barrier The workshops did not have age or pre-requisite courses, so everyone could attend. Such inclusivity was always an area of welcome from where it should have endless perspectives and understanding.
